Obtaining Certified Copies of Marriage Certificates The California Department of Public Health – Vital Records (CDPH-VR) can ONLY provide certified copies of certificates for public marriages that occurred in the years: - 1905 to 1999 - 2008 to 2023 CDPH-VR is not able to provide certified copies of certificates for the years 2000 through 2007.

Marriage Certificate Request
Effective January 1, 2026, vital record fees will increase pursuant to Assembly Bill (AB) 64 (Chapter 662, Statutes of 2025). The fee increase is applicable to the cost of certified copies of birth, marriage, death, and fetal death certificates. For mail-in requests, our office will continue to honor 2025 fees for requests that are postmarked on or before December 31, 2025.

What are Historic Birth, Death, and Marriage Records? The historic birth and death records date from 1849 through 1986 with the bulk dating from 1860 to 1956. Starting in 1905, a California state agency was designated as the primary record holders of birth and death records and any copies maintained locally by the County Recorder or Health and Human Services were secondary copies.
